Vision

The year is 2005, and McGlone Elementary has become a community hub that cultivates success for all – connecting people of all sizes, ages, ethnicities, and genders. McGlone provides opportunities for exploration and learning both inside and outside its classrooms, acknowledging that each of us learns in our own way. McGlone is a safe, colorful gathering place “owned” by the community, able to accommodate the needs of a single child, as well as host a community celebration for a thousand or more.

Goals

  • McGlone is connected to the community, both literally and figuratively. The community has a stake in the success of the school. The grounds celebrate the community’s multiple cultural layers. The community uses the grounds at appropriate times and circulates easily within them. The community gardens here.
  • The learning and exploring happening outside of the school building is intentionally related to and connected to the learning and exploring happening inside of the school building.
  • McGlone is a place that people occupy every day of the year. It is clean and welcoming. There is a hierarchy of places from intimate to open. There is sun, and there is shade. Grass grows here, as do shrubs, trees, and flowers.
  • McGlone is a safe place that the community is proud of. The grounds are easily monitored at recess. The developmental needs of children of all ages are met. Playground elements are durable, attractive, and safe-fit for intensive use by the community’s children. Kids love being here.
